Habit or Obsession?

An acquaintance once confided that she was annoyed with not being able to stop biting her nails.  She hated the way it looked when she had her fingers in her mouth, the stress the act caused to her teeth and how atrocious it made her fingers look.  She wondered if this would be considered a habit or an obsession since it had literally ruled her life for many years.

Habits can be good or bad, and are behavioral.  Habits are created with an action and replicated over time until the behavior becomes automatic and unconscious.  In other words, a routine is developed and nurtured to continue the newly found habit.  Sometimes there is a catalyst that accompanies the habit, such as stress, boredom, happiness and so on.  Bad habits have been successfully replaced with positive habits in many cases.

Conversely, an obsession will tend to be more compulsive, overwhelming and is often accompanied by anxiety.  Addiction is considered an obsession.  A key factor in distinguishing a habit from an obsession is willpower.  A habit can usually be changed or eliminated through free will.  An obsession may require the analysis and assistance of a mental health professional.

Cigarette smoking can be characterized as both a habit and obsession.  The nicotine is addictive and thus, an obsession.  The act of smoking is repetitive and thus, a habit.  Studies show that the nicotine from 2-3 cigarettes daily will maintain the addiction.  The fact that many people smoke more becomes nothing but a habit.

Breaking the barrier on bad habits is just one of the many behavioral subjects we discuss and examine at Baney Enterprises.  For further information, please contact us today for a free, no obligation consultation.  Together, we can help you “Find Your Fire!”

Quotes From Great Leaders

"The greatest discovery of my generation is that human beings can alter their lives by altering their attitude of mind...If you change your mind, you can change your life." ~ William James

"Whatever you do, do it well.  Do it so well that when people see you do it, they will want to come back and see you do it again and they will want to bring others and show them how well you do what you do." ~ Walt Disney

“The secret of getting ahead is getting started.  The secret of getting started is breaking down your complex overwhelming tasks into small manageable tasks, and then starting on the first one.”  ~ Mark Twain

Baby Steps Are Good!

Self-criticism can be debilitating.  Not making allowances for struggling with time, people or other resources can prove to be damaging to your mental well-being.  You’ve set a goal.  You are behind your timeline, you’ve suffered setbacks and things are not going as smoothly as you’d hoped and anticipated.  What’s your next move?

Any goal, project or need for change should have contingencies built into the plan.  Hopefully, you’d allowed for quality control checks along the way.  When the unforeseen happens, you can beat yourself up or you can retool and adjust your plan.  One of the biggest pitfalls to success is over-thinking and under-planning.  Another is failing to appreciate forward movement, even if it appears to be only “baby steps.”  Lack of progress or slow progress is normal and should be expected; however, allowing it to negatively impact your vision must not be accepted.

Celebrate your accomplishments no matter how small.  Be resilient, but never take your eye off the target.  Enjoy the journey, baby steps are good!

The Mentor Moment

Are You Using Your Resources?

When a professional football team drives the ball towards the goal, it is indeed a team effort.  If every member of the squad did not perform their respective jobs, chances are limited that the quarterback would succeed in completing his mission.  All components of the operation are considered team resources, from the scouts who find the talent, the coaches who train the players, the athletes who participate in the game, and the fans who cheer in the stands.  Factor in the training, conditioning, strategy, equipment, etc., and there are many parts to a successful operation.

Each of us has many resources available to succeed in our respective endeavors.  Some of us fail to identify, administer and cultivate our individual resources over the length of our lifetime.  Imagine being the only player on the field against a full opposing team.  Is that you?
